Art Department
Mission Statement
The mission of the Art Department at St. Joseph is to help students develop an understanding of both technical and cognitive skills that will enable them to communicate through a visual medium. This will be done through a progressive sequential art program.
Goals
- Develop an understanding of Art History;
- Develop an ability to use and manipulate materials to create art work;
- Develop problem solving skills;
- Demonstrate communication of ideas through visual art;
- Develop an awareness of careers in the art field.
Courses Available
Students may register for two terms of Art. The exception is Studio Art I & II, which have specific course prerequisites.
Basic Drawing, is the required introductory course, and may be followed with another ½ credit of Art.

Basic Drawing – One Term
Elective / ½ credit
Emphasis is placed on the principles of drawing: form, contour, line, proportion, and perspective. This is followed by practical application of these principles.
Ceramics – One Term
Elective / one term / ½ credit
Introduction to clay. Includes making pottery and sculptures. Prerequisite: Basic Drawing
Ceramics II – One Term
Elective / one term/ ½ credit
Advanced work in clay. Continuation from Ceramics. Prerequisite: Ceramics
Printmaking – Every Other Year
2008 – 2009 Elective / one term / ½ credit
Printmaking includes linoleum, wood, metal and acetate printing. Prerequisite: Basic Drawing
Intro to Painting – One Term
2008-2009 Elective/one tern/ ½ credit
Into to Paint introduces the basics of painting; color theory, medium, composition. Work will be done in acrylic, watercolor and tempera. Prerequisite: Basic Drawing
Art Metals & Stained Glass – Every Other Year
2007 -2008 Elective /one term / ½ credit
Metals include: jewelry, tooling and sculpture. Copper Foil method is taught in the Stained Glass class. Prerequisite: Basic Drawing
Graphic Art
Elective / one term / ½ credit
Artwork & Photography work done using Photoshop & Illustrator. Basic computer skills required. There will also be some drawing done in this class. Prerequisite: Basic Drawing
Advanced Drawing/Painting
Elective /One Term / ½ credit
Advanced Drawing and Painting techniques will be explored. Students will also be expected to create original ideas for their work. Prerequisite: Basic Drawing
Studio Art I & II
Elective / three terms/ 1.5 credits / Honors
Independent work is done in painting, drawing, mosaic, sculpture and clay. Five assignments are due per trimester. There is one research assignment and there is mandatory participation in Studio Art Show at the end of year. Prerequisite: 2 credits of Art and instructor approval (Juniors & Seniors)
