Welcome To Campus Ministry!
Growing in faith is at the heart of St. Joseph Catholic Academy's mission. Four years of religious studies is required and participation in the faith life of the community is expected. Campus Ministry promotes student participation in Eucharistic celebrations and prayer services. It also provides students with the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and share in the celebration of a number of our church sacramental.
One of the main tenets of the Campus Ministry program is service, both to our immediate school community and the larger Kenosha community. In order to fulfill this tenet, we started in 2011 the “Shalom Item-of-the-Week.” Simply stated, every Monday, the students will be informed of their particular item, based on grade (high school or middle school). This item is collected and delivered to the Shalom Center.
This relationship between SJCA and the Shalom Center will continue until all the mouths are fed in Kenosha. This is such a great opportunity for us to be Christ to neighbors in Kenosha, and I pray that this not be a burden, but an opportunity to give just a little to those in need.
Retreats
A two-day retreat is available to all seniors and sophomores, and a one day retreat is available to all juniors and freshman. All students are expected to participate in service projects according to their talents and interests while they are at St. Joseph Catholic Academy. The spiritual elements permeates the curriculum, integrating faith and life.
School Liturgies and Catholic Mass
All Holy Days of Obligation that occur when school is in session are marked with the celebration of a school Mass. Mass is also celebrated on all other days that are important to us as a school community. Besides the celebration of Mass, prayer services also help us mark holy seasons such as Lent and Advent. During Lent, the student body takes part in a Penance Service and the Sacrament of Reconciliation is made available at that time. The praying of the Rosary is led every morning before school in the chapel by a faculty member. There is also Eucharistic Adoration for 1/2 an hour every Friday morning before school and it concludes for 1/2 hour every Friday afternoon after school. During Lent, there is also the opportunity of Friday mornings to pray the Stations of the Cross.
Sacraments
The clergy from our supporting parishes commit themselves to coming about two times a month to preside at the Eucharist. Just as the Catholic Church is a Sacramental Church, the pastors of our parishes and St. Joseph Catholic Academy strive to celebrate our faith as sacramental people. Besides the Eucharist, Reconciliation is offered to our students.
Theology
The comprehensive curriculum will serve to heighten the student's awareness and meaning of Christianity and Catholicism as well as lead the student to make thoughtful and well informed choices in life. The theology curriculum includes the study of the historic journey of faith, beginning with the Scriptures through the contemporary Catholic Church. Students take a full 4 credits of theology with one semester of theology every semester they are a student at St. Joseph Catholic Academy. These include courses in Sacred Scripture, Doctrine, Sacraments and Morality, the Church's History as studied through Christian Writers, a study of Christian Vocations and Lifestyles, and an overview of our Living Faith.
